What is Caffeine?
Wikipedia’s definition is ‘Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant of the methylxanthine class. It is the world’s most widely consumed psychoactive drug. Unlike many other psychoactive substances, it is legal and unregulated in nearly all parts of the world.’
Caffeine is a natural stimulant that affects your brain and nervous system. It stimulates, meaning it gives you energy, makes you more alert and prevents tiredness.
It is most commonly found in tea, coffee and cacao plants and was discovered in 1819 by a physician named Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge.
What is Decaf?
Decaffeination is the removal of caffeine from the source, such as tea leaves and coffee beans.
A big misconception of decaf drinks is that they contain zero caffeine. Most still actually contain a very small amount, even after they go through the decaffeination process.
Decaf is great for those who are overly sensitive to the drug, or if you enjoy a tea or coffee in the evening.
How is Caffeine Removed from Coffee?
There are four main methods of decaffeination used today, according to Coffee Confidential:
In-Direct Solvent Process
- the beans are soaked in near boiling water for several hours.
- They are then washed for several more hours in methylene chloride or ethyl acetate.
- They are then placed back in the original near boiling water to re-absorb the flavours and oils.
The Direct Solvent Process
- the beans are steamed for 30 minutes to open their pores.
- They are then rinsed for several hours in methylene chloride or ethyl acetate.
- They are then steamed again to remove any residue.
The Swiss Water Process
- A batch of beans are soaked in hot water to remove the caffeine.
- The water is then passed through a filter to capture the large coffee molecules, allowing the small oil and flavour molecules to pass through.
- The flavourless decaf beans are discarded, but the flavour rich water is reused to remove caffeine from a fresh batch of beans.
- This means that the flavours in the fresh batch can’t dissolve, only caffeine moves from the beans to the water.
The Carbon Dioxide Process
- Liquid Carbon Dioxide is forced into an extraction vessel with water soaked beans to draw out the caffeine.
Our Beans are decaffeinated using the swiss water process. This is the favoured method by many, as it is completely natural and involves no chemicals. It is also a great way to retain the full flavour of the beans.
Caffeine During Pregnancy
When pregnant you don’t have to cut coffee out completely. It is recommended to limit your caffeine intake to less than 200 milligrams per day, which is an 11 ounce cup of coffee.
It is recommended to limit your intake because our adult bodies can process caffeine in the correct way and work to get it out of our systems.
However, as babies are still developing their bodies take a lot longer to process this caffeine and get it out of their systems, so they will experience the affects of it for a lot longer.
This is why decaf is such a great option for pregnant coffee lovers. You can enjoy the authentic, rich flavours with the effects of caffeine.
