The Region: Kirinyaga, Central Kenya
Many rivers run through central Kenya and the soil is rich and volcanic, providing smallholders and Cooperatives with the resources to grow and process some of Kenya’s most fruit-forward coffees. The combination of fertile soil, seasonal rainfall and high altitude provide the ideal climate for coffees characterised by high acidity, full body and ripe fruit flavours. Coffees from the Kirinyaga region tend to develop and mature slowly, producing very dense, hard beans high in acidity and complexity.
The Growers: Baragwi Farmers’ Cooperative Society
Baragwi FCS is the largest society in Kenya, operating 12 washing stations and with a membership of over 17,000 smallholder farmers. While the organisation is large, the Cooperative has successful implemented consistent processing and training methods across all of its sites. Year on year, more farmers are also using shade trees to combat climate change and enhance the growing environment.
Coffee Processing: Muchagara Factory
The Muchagara washing station is part of the Baragwi FCS. Named after the village in the Western side of Kirinyaga District near Mount Kenya, it has been operational since 1959-making it the oldest wet processing centre in the region. Situated in a highly fertile area, the factory covers a substantial space near the local village and more than 1500 local residents are employed there. The factory has over 200 drying tables, it is then fermented in tiled tanks for 12 – 48 hours depending on climate conditions. The coffee then goes through a grading channel where it is washed and soaked underwater for 12 – 72 hours, this process is completed with fresh river water. The final stage is drying, which takes place slowly over 2 – 3 weeks on raised African beds until the moisture content is reduced to 10-12%
Taste Profile
An expressive, high quality coffee with a bright acidity. We think this coffee is best suited for filter.

My current favourite for the aeropress. I’ve just ordered my second batch and I’m sure I’ll keep ordering as long as this is available. The description mentions nutmeg which almost put me off, personally I don’t get that but I totally get the great toffee tones in this brew. Highly recommended.

We tried a lot of sample packs including Jamaican Blue Mountain, which I think is over rated, we did a back to back taste test, and I consider the Kenya Blue Mountain to have a better flavour, I would urge any one looking for a really good coffee, to try the Kenya Blue Mountain, you won’t be disappointed, We’re now on our 3rd kilo and really love it and will continue to buy this amazing coffee, from Adams & Russell because the service you get is really good, if you spend over £30 you can get free next day delivery if you order in the morning, such good service couldn’t be bettered.

Jury’s out for me at the moment but I concur with Peter that the Jamaican BM is really over rated – this is much better – the price is much better too. I found the Jamaican was quite bland & didn’t have any oomphh – I’ve just bought 7 assorted 125/227g packs to try so I’m interested to see which comes out on top. I’ve bought from many different coffee sellers, usually at shows & then followed up buying direct. I came upon A&R by chance on line as I still haven’t found one that says it will be my all-time favourite. Who knows it may well be the Kenyan BM out of this current haul but today it only gets 3 stars – 5 more packs to try first. 5⭐️ for your excellent delivery service tho

This coffee is delicious: smooth and very easy on the palate. It’s a lovely morning coffee, though I like something with a bit more ‘bite’ later in the day! I would certainly buy this again. I’ve also found that the more I drink, the more I like it! I’ve possibly been more used to fiercer brews, but this is a grower!

I bought this from somewhere on our travels with the caravan. It is by far the best coffee I have ever tasted and much better than Jamaica Blue Mountain. Coming to the end of the beans I have happily found Adams & Russell on line. What great reviews they have. I will be ordering more of this and taking advantage of their 3 for £21 to try others.

A bean that is balanced in all respects proper use of more beans in one cup of coffee will have a better taste and aroma.

I think this is one of my favourites from Adams and Russell. It’s got a lovely mix of tastes and aromas. The acidity is really well balanced by the natural sweetness of the bean. It’s also incredibly smooth and smells amazing after grinding.

It was 36°C in London. Instead of making filter coffee with my V60, recently I have been making loads of cold brew coffee this week instead. I’ve tried a few different bean and this Kenya Blue Mountain is the best for cold brew. The acidity, sweetness and bodies are well balanced. Very smooth on the palate. The floral aroma is very enjoyable. The only down side is, it’s a bit too easy drinking that could substitute water or beer. I ended up with too much caffeine consumption throughout the day.

This stuff is magic and now my go to, especially for guests who often find other beans too strong. Lovely smooth and light coffee.
