Lapsang Osprey Tea

Lapsang Osprey Loose Leaf

With Souchong meaning a fine black Chinese tea, and Lapsang meaning a pronounced smoky flavor and aroma, this gives you a rough idea of this product.

It comes all the way from the magnificent Wuyi Mountains, which have an elevation of 2,158 metres.

To create this unmistakable flavour, the leaves are smoked over a pine fire. Some variations of this tea get a bad reputation for being unpleasant and overly smoky, however you will only find this with low-quality leaves. At Adams and Russell we only supply the highest quality products, so this will not be the case for our customers.

These leaves differ from our other products due to the light tartness and smoky character. We say it a must try for those who haven’t experienced this kind of flavour in tea.

Health Benefits of Lapsang Souchong

This unique variation of black tea is said to have some incredible health benefits:

  • Can help lower cholesterol
  • Contains theanine which is known to have a calming effect on the body
  • The antioxidants can give your immune system a boost
  • Can help prevent inflammation which can be the root of some diseases
  • The combination of beneficial vitamins, catechins and polyphenols could potentially reduce the growth of cancerous cells
  • The combination of caffeine and antioxidants can help with weight loss programmes

Does Lapsang Souchong contain Caffeine?

Caffeine is a molecule found in the leaves and beans of tea and coffee. It is a natural stimulant that affects your central nervous system, increasing your alertness and preventing tiredness.

Black tea generally has around one quarter the amount of caffeine that a regular cup of coffee has, dependant on the type and brew time.

However, Souchong is made with large, mature leaves, which contain less caffeine than young, mature ones. This means that this beverage has very little caffeine content, great for those who still want to enjoy the delicious flavours of this tea, but want a less stimulating option.

How to make Lapsang Tea

Brewing this beverage is not much different to the rest of our tea products, although we do recommend experimenting with these steps to bring out the different flavours and find out just how you like it.

Firstly, find a good quality teapot, as this has been proven to affect the quality of your drink. If you don’t yet have one, have a browse of our products as they are sure to give great results.

Usually we recommend one heaped teaspoon for every 8oz (227g) of water. However, if this is your first time with Lapsang Opsrey, perhaps start with a little less while you become familiar with the unique flavour.

Bring your water to the boil, making sure your leaves are ready, as you will need to pour the water straight off the boil for optimum brewing.

We recommend starting with a 2 minute brew time, and then it’s up to you to increase this time if you would like it a little stronger.

Lastly, pour your tea and enjoy!
