The best English Breakfast Tea

At Adams+Russell, we’re absolutely focused on providing you the best teas from a variety of flavours. So we certainly can’t forget one of the most popular teas on the market in the English Breakfast. You can choose to have it as a light and refreshing drink or a robust and flavoursome (depending on the brewing time)  but either way it will certainly give you a little boost in the morning.

This is the tea that most of us might relate to as ‘normal tea’. It is made up of a combination of Assam, Ceylon and Darjeeling tea leaves. By mixing these together, a beautiful black tea is created that is rich and robust.

English Breakfast Tea Loose Leaf

You would be forgiven if you thought that the word English was derived in England. However, upon further research, you will find that it was the Americans who began calling it English breakfast. Partly because of the popularity in Britain for drinking black teas.

How long does English Breakfast tea last

If you don’t open the packaging, your leaves will stay fresh for approximately 6 months. However, if you open the packaging and leave it so that air will get to it, then the freshness will be lost a lot sooner.

It’s best to store it in a pantry or in a cool dark place until you need it again. If you do leave it for a long time and are unsure how fresh it is, then take a light smell of the leaves to see if you can still feel the flavour coming from the packaging.

How to make English Breakfast Tea

It’s recommended to use a small heaped teaspoon of leaves for every 8oz (227g) of water. For example, if you’re using one of our double walled teapots that’s 1.2 litres capacity, you will need approximately 5 small heaped teaspoons of leaves.

By using the right amount of water to tea, you will be much more likely to extract the flavours and obtain the full bodied drink that you’re looking for. Once you’ve filled the teapot with leaves and boiled the kettle, it’s time to let it steep (or brew). You will want to let it brew for approximately 3-5 minutes. This is where you can really control the strength of your drink.

English Breakfast Tea Flavourings

If you’re looking to add a bit of flavouring, why not try adding honey or one of our flavoured DaVinci syrups.

English Breakfast Tea Pairings

As this is a morning drink, it goes great with most morning snacks, such as cereal, toast or even a croissant.

While it is more common to drink this tea in the morning, it’s also a drink that goes great in the afternoon with a small cake or something a little sweeter too.

Can I drink mine with Milk?

The short answer is ‘yes’. Many people have their drink with a splash of milk. However, we always suggest to not put too much milk in it because you will just dilute the flavour and will end up with a warm milky beverage instead of a flavoursome English Breakfast Tea.

My first purchase of loose leaf tea and I will definitely buy more. Loose tea really brings out the flavour.
