How to make perfect coffee with a cafetière

Brewing with this device is simple once you know how. Once you’re familiar with the process, it is a simple way to brew delicious fresh coffee. Here is our recommended guide:

  1. Rinse out the cafetière with hot water to make sure it is dirt and dust free. This also preheats the device which keeps your drink hotter for loner (this is an optional step).
  2. Add in the grounds (use a guide of one scoop per mug).
  3. Boil your kettle and wait a minute or two for it to cool down. Using boiling water may over extract the grounds and pull out the bitterness.
  4. Pour the hot water slowly over the grounds in circular motions to extract all the flavours.
  5. Leave to steep for around 3 and a half minutes and place the plunger on the surface.
  6. Once brewed press down the plunger, serve and enjoy.

Read our guide to cafetieres for more advice on brewing, grind size and steep time.

How much coffee do I use in La Cafetière 8 and 3 cup?

We recommend using 15g of grounds for every 250ml of water. This device comes in two sizes, 8 cup and 3 cup. Here are some guidelines to follow:

  • 3 cup (350ml) = 21g
  • 8 cup (1L) = 60g
